The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reports that 15 foreign nationals facing extortion charges have applied for refugee status in Canada, though their nationalities are not disclosed. Surrey, B.C., Mayor Brenda Locke expressed her outrage, stating the legal system is being exploited by criminals, as her city has seen 106 extortion cases this year. CBSA emphasized that individuals found inadmissible for serious criminality would not have their claims heard. A provincial task force is addressing the increase in extortion crimes, particularly affecting the South Asian community in B.C.
