State of emergency ends in Bluecliffs

A Southland community is entering the recovery phase after the state of emergency it had been under for more than a month ended. Rapid erosion from the sea and Waiau River threatened properties in Bluecliffs last month, with three metres of land lost in a day. Earlier this month, residents were told to evacuate so an old dump site that potentially contained explosives could be cleared. A state of emergency had been in place since 8 February, but expired on Sunday. Southland District Council Mayor Rob Scott signed a 'transition to recovery' declaration on the same day, saying they were in a...

Buying loose produce could save NZ $36m a year

Food Waste Action Week 2024 is encouraging New Zealanders to ‘Choose What You’ll Us’, highlighting the benefits of buying loose fruit and vegetables. Love Food Hate Waste NZ says that New Zealanders throw away over 14,000 tonnes of bananas, potatoes, and apples each year. “Shockingly, fruit and vegetables are in the top three most wasted food items in New Zealand, costing us approximately $36 million every year,” says Juno Scott-Kelly, Love Food Hate Waste NZ’s marketing and communications manager. “We know the cause of this waste comes down to food going off before it can be eaten and too much...

Ben Morgan: A chaotic Russian election week

Russian elections last week, from 15-17 March, were an opportunity for Ukraine to maximise chaos.  A task they set about with gusto, Ukrainian drones damaging Russian oil refineries and anti-Putin Russian militias crossing the border to attack villages in Belgorod and Kursk Oblasts. The accession of Sweden into NATO and signs of increased European support for Ukraine combined with Ukrainian air and ground attacks set off another round of Putin’s nuclear rhetoric.  Russia’s president also stated he would increase the number of soldiers on the Finnish border. But, the biggest untold story this week is the sudden improvement in Russian...

Local third-party managers dumped from BNZ funds in first move for FirstCape Investment News

Peter Forster: BNZ wealth general manager BNZ Investments has given notice to all third-party fund managers looking after Australasian assets in a move that will likely see Castle Point, Mint, Nikko and the First Seniter RealIndex stripped of mandates. The decision follows the formal Jarden shareholder vote last week approving the creation of FirstCape – the new entity set to house Jarden NZ wealth management, JBWere NZ, BNZ Investments (including its KiwiSaver scheme) and Harbour Asset Management. It is understood the BNZ Australasian assets will shift to Harbour funds once the FirstCape transition completes some time next month. The underlying...

Asset rejig sees $150m Hawke’s Bay council fund portfolio out to market Investment News

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council (HBRC) has put a $150 million wholesale mandate in play after consolidating investment assets in a single entity and dialling up its risk profile late last year. As part of the strategic rethink, the Council delegated management of all investment assets to the Hawke’s Bay Regional Investment Company (HBRIC) subsidiary in December, opening up its $150 million managed funds portfolio to tender. Jarden and Mercer currently share management duties of the fund portfolio, which was split between direct Council-controlled assets and about $50 million held in a HBRIC portfolio. Meeting minutes show the Council tapped...

An Ode to .. the Regent Seymour

The Adventures of the Young Regent Seymour King Luxon had vanished, So the Young Regent Seymour Was sent to tour the outer provinces Of the Kingdom in his place. Seymour rode his white battle steed Hubris And carried the garish magenta banner Of the House of Toad. He came to the drought stricken fields Of the Fourth Estate. The pitiable scribes gnawed at the grass. The Regent had no sympathy: He chuckled with hearty vigour, and advised: “Let them eat legacy media cake.” Next Seymour travelled north to parley With the fierce Tribespeople, who demanded The honouring of Ancient Treaties....

Highlanders stumble to loss against Brumbies

The Highlanders have lost some of their hard-earned momentum with a 27-21 loss to the Brumbies this afternoon. They dominated much of the early period of the game at Forsyth Barr Stadium before struggling to keep out the surging Australians. The Brumbies led by two points with four minutes to play before they scored a lineout try through Lachlan Lonergan, and Noah Lolesio put the game out of reach with a tricky conversion. Sam Gilbert kicked a consolation penalty on the buzzer to at least snaffle a bonus point for the Highlanders. It was hard to spotlight exactly where the...
