Kate Winslet on ‘The Regime’ and Resilience In Hollywood

Winslet, much like her characters, sees herself as a survivor. She has endured two public divorces and the relentless pursuit of paparazzi. When she was a new mother, she would disguise herself, hand her baby over a wall to her neighbor, climb over the wall herself, then take the baby through the backyard gate and board a city bus where she could go unrecognized. The strength Winslet displays on set is a defense mechanism she developed years ago in response to judgment and persecution. She refuses to let criticism bring her down, even if it means suffering in silence. As a mother, she is horrified by the public body-shaming that young women face today. In "I Am Ruth," a film made with her daughter, Winslet explores the impact of social media bullying on teenagers. She has transitioned from an ingénue to a fierce protector, advocating for her crew on set and providing support and guidance to younger actors. Winslet draws on her life experiences to bring depth to her roles. As she has aged, emotions have become easier to access, thanks to the multitude of experiences she has accumulated over the years. Her scripts are filled with notes detailing the...

Book Review: ‘Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring,’ by Brad Gooch

Born in 1958, the same year NASA launched its first spacecraft, Haring wanted to be an artist from pretty much the moment he could clutch a crayon. He was plainly influenced by Disneyland, television and other boomer eye candy. His father, Allen, an electronics technician, amateur cartoonist and basement ham radio tinkerer, was in the same Marine squadron as Lee Harvey Oswald (“That’s Ozzie!” he exclaimed, seeming him shot on TV); his mother, Joan, sewed little Keith a bat-eared hat to watch “Batman.” (Later, with terrible poignancy, she would help sew his memorial panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt.) In perfect sync with his much-hyped generation, Keith turned on, tuned in and would drop out of two art schools; he was a workaholic, but on his own terms. He adored the Monkees more than the Beatles and was briefly a Jesus freak. His homosexuality emerged gradually and was not much discussed with his parents, even after he became a prominent member of ACT UP. He always liked being part of something bigger. “It was never just Keith; there was always a circle around him,” the curator and reliable bon mot generator Jeffrey Deitch tells Gooch. “He was like a Pied...

Dune: Part 2 Box Office Update

Dune: Part Two is expected to have an opening of around $76 million, with the CinemaScore rating indicating that it will continue to perform well at the box office. The weekend box office is buzzing with excitement as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is set to meet expectations with an estimated three-day haul of $70-80 million. Deadline reports that the Thursday/Friday total is expected to be around $30-34 million, with the overall weekend total likely hitting $76 million. There are speculations that it may even exceed expectations if it continues to perform strongly throughout the weekend. This opening marks the largest for a movie since Five Nights at Freddy’s in October. The film is attracting an older audience, which could be a positive sign for its long-term success at the box office. Oppenheimer had a similar opening with $82 million before reaching an impressive $329 million domestically. Older audiences tend to take their time to see movies, preferring not to rush to theaters on opening weekend. Many viewers are opting for IMAX screenings to fully experience the film without dealing with long lines and poor seating options. Another promising factor for Dune: Part Two’s box office potential is its A...

Bill Maher Puts Dr. Phil On The Couch And Asks Him To Explain Himself

On one side, there is an atheist and avowed bachelor. On the other side, a psychologist who believes that family and faith are the keys to overcoming our current problems. These polar opposites engaged in intense debate on Friday's Real Time, as Bill Maher faced off against the spirited Dr. Phil McGraw, author of the new book, We've Got Issues: How You Can Stand Strong for America's Soul and Sanity, and soon to host Dr. Phil Primetime on his new cable network, Merit Street Media. Dr. Phil received a standing ovation upon entering, and Maher acknowledged that he has been America's therapist for a long time. Maher noted that Dr. Phil now seems to want to do the same for the country at large. Dr. Phil agreed, stating that he wanted to do it "in steps." He mentioned how people's concerns have evolved over time and how the internet is playing a transformative role in society. Maher and Dr. Phil discussed the impact of "wokeness" on society and debated whether some of Dr. Phil's proposals were politically motivated. They clashed over the importance of family in America and the challenges faced by families today. The discussion also touched on masculinity,...

Tish & Noah Cyrus Didn’t Date Dominic Purcell *At The Same Time* – But There WAS A Violation!

The Cyrus family feud has escalated more than anticipated... Initially, the divorce caused a significant divide within the family. However, rumors of a feud between Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus surfaced. This week, the shocking story of the conflict between Noah and Tish Cyrus emerged. Speculation of tension between the mother and daughter arose when Noah and her brother Braison did not attend Tish's marriage to Australian actor Dominic Purcell. Initially, sources denied any family drama. However, a recent report suggested that the matriarch had allegedly taken Dominic from Noah! Sources claimed that the 24-year-old singer was involved with Dominic before Tish pursued him. This situation raises eyebrows for multiple reasons, especially given Dominic's age of 54 and the unusual circumstance of mother and daughter dating the same person. There have been conflicting reports regarding the truth of the story. One source suggested that Noah fabricated the relationship with Dominic to portray herself as a victim in her feud with Tish. Another source indicated that the pair was indeed dating before Tish got involved, but the claims had been exaggerated. Further insights into the situation were provided by an insider speaking to Entertainment Tonight. The source clarified that Noah and...

Part 2′ Soars As an Epic Sci-Fi Sequel

Villeneuve brings the epic scope, Zendaya brings the heart and humanity. By Rob Hunter · Published on March 1st, 2024 Making a big studio film is always a risk, and intentionally splitting the central narrative across two or more movies amplifies that risk in every possible way. Sometimes it pays off as with the Star Wars franchise’s nearly half-century run, and sometimes it shits the bed — studios spent $400 million making three Divergent films only to cancel the fourth one leaving the whole series without an ending. Dune hit theaters and HBO Max in 2021 with the sequel’s production dependent on its success, and happily, that success came both on the big screen and small. Nearly three years later, that sequel has arrived, and Dune: Part Two is a magnificent follow-up that blows open the action, themes, and relationships of the first in fantastically thrilling ways. Dune ends with the annihilation of the House Atreides empire leaving only Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), alive. The pair are taken in by cautious members of the Fremen as Paul proclaims his intentions to help the people secure freedom from oppression, and the new film picks up mere hours...

"I have never questioned his sobriety before this moment and from day one I was his biggest supporter," the 37-year-old reality star told her followers, after referring to him as "Cocaine Carl" on a recent episode of the Bravo show. Lindsay Hubbard addressed the backlash aimed at her after she questioned Carl Radke's sobriety on the latest episode of Summer House. During Thursday night's episode of the Bravo reality series Hubbard accused Radke -- her then fiancé -- of not being sober following an explosive argument. "The way that he spoke to me tonight was very reminiscent of, like, Carl on cocaine," Hubbard said to the rest group. "I don't know what happened with him, but he was not sober tonight. Something's wrong with Carl. The way he was speaking to me, he was cocaine Carl tonight. It was weird." Radke has been sober from alcohol and drugs since 2021. TooFab / Getty Summer House's Carl Radke Breaks Silence on Split From Lindsay Hubbard (Exclusive) View Story Taking to Instagram on Friday, Hubbard said she wished she "had used better wording." "I was emotional and hurt by what had transpired earlier in the night and what I said was meant...

Trailer for Hulu’s ‘Davey & Jonesie’s Locker’ Multiverse Comedy Series

Trailer for Hulu's 'Davey & Jonesie's Locker' Multiverse Comedy Series by Alex Billington March 1, 2024 Source: YouTube "It kinda just sounds like you're making up science." Strap in for some high school multiverse chaos! Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a comedy series titled Davey & Jonesie's Locker, produced by both Prime Video & Hulu. It's ready to launch for streaming later in March. Veronika Slowikowska stars as Davey and Jaelynn Thora Brooks as Jonesie - best friends. The two feel out of step with their peers and the banal backdrops of their high school. When they discover their locker is actually a portal to a Multiverse, they set off on new adventures. Alas, these adventures are set in alternate versions of their high school, with offbeat iterations of their classmates. The cast also includes Dan Beirne as disgraced quantum physicist turned science teacher, Mr. Schneider, who plays a key role; along with Emily Piggford, Nikko Angelo Hinayo, Kevin Lauta Osea, Erika Swayze, and showrunner Evany Rosen as the school's principal. After the hoopla of Everything Everywhere All at Once, it was inevitable they'd create a wacky sitcom high school comedy involving multiverses. Thankfully this does look pretty...

New to Amazon Prime Video ‘Road House’ Starts streaming: March 21 The original 1989 “Road House” is one of those movies that became a pop culture classic through brute force. The story of a nightclub bouncer fighting small-town corruption is by no means high art; but it’s a solidly crafted, entertaining pulp melodrama, which won fans thanks to its ubiquity on cable television and its winning Patrick Swayze performance. The veteran action film director Doug Liman directs the remake, which moves all the macho bluster and street-fights to Florida from Missouri and casts Jake Gyllenhaal in the Swayze role. An eclectic cast includes the comedian Jessica Williams as a bar owner looking for protection from a cocky crime boss (Billy Magnussen) and his ferocious henchman (played by the U.F.C. champ Conor McGregor). Also arriving: March 7 “Ricky Stanicky” March 12 “Boat Story” March 14 “Frida” March 19 “Dinner Party Diaries with José Andrés”...

Bangladesh Fire Kills at Least 44 in Shopping Mall

A fire tore through a shopping mall in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, late Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 individuals and leaving many others injured, according to officials. Health minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen stated that the fatalities were due to carbon monoxide poisoning as people were trapped in a sealed room and suffocated from the smoke. Fire officials reported that at least 75 others were injured in the incident. Earlier, police inspector Bachchu Mia mentioned that 27 bodies had been identified and returned to their families. Witnesses described the mall as having only one staircase and elevator without an emergency exit, making it challenging for people to escape. Some individuals trapped inside resorted to jumping from higher floors, they noted. Bangladesh has faced deadly fires and industrial disasters, particularly in garment factories. Despite the country's economic growth, concerns have been raised by human rights and labor organizations regarding poor working conditions and workplace safety measures. The worst of these disasters occurred in 2013 when an eight-story garment factory collapse claimed over 1,100 lives. In 2021, a factory fire in Narayanganj resulted in the deaths of more than 50 individuals. The fire at the shopping mall...
