The Mossos d’Esquadra, also known as the Policia de la Generalitat de Catalunya, was established in the early 1980s to grant Catalonia greater regional autonomy, with its powers expanded in the mid-1990s to handle most policing duties in the region. Alongside the Basque Country, Catalonia is one of the few regions in Spain with its own police force authorized to carry out major law enforcement tasks, except for border and passport controls.
