Castroneves turns to provisional for Daytona 500

Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves crashed early in his qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway, forcing him to use a provisional spot to race in the Daytona 500. Bubba Wallace and Austin Cindric won the two qualifying races, while Justin Allgaier secured the lone “open” spot in the first race. Castroneves’ crash means he will be the 41st entry in the largest field since 2015, with controversy surrounding the new rule allowing a “world-class driver” to receive a provisional spot.
