Yemen faces cash shortages despite stabilized currency

The Yemeni government’s efforts to stabilize the Yemeni riyal have led to a decrease in its freefall against the US dollar, but have resulted in a severe liquidity crunch. Measures taken by the government include shutting down unauthorized exchange firms, centralizing internal remittances, and forming a committee to oversee imports and provide traders with hard currency. However, this has caused a shortage of cash in riyals, leaving many Yemenis unable to access their savings in hard currency and leading to a black market for currency exchange.

Residents in government-controlled cities like Aden, Taiz, and Mukalla are facing difficulties exchanging foreign currency, with some exchange firms limiting daily exchanges to as little as 50 Saudi riyals per person. This shortage of cash has paralyzed businesses and forced individuals to seek alternative methods for obtaining local currency.

In response to the cash shortage, some Yemenis have turned to trusted shopkeepers for delayed payments, exchanged foreign currency at local groceries or supermarkets at unfavorable rates, or utilized online money transfers. However, those in rural areas with limited internet access and exchange shops are facing even greater challenges in converting hard currency.

Why It Matters:
The Yemeni government’s efforts to stabilize the riyal have led to unintended consequences, including a severe liquidity crunch and a shortage of cash in riyals. This has impacted businesses, individuals holding foreign currency, and those reliant on remittances, forcing them to find alternative methods for obtaining local currency. The situation highlights the ongoing economic challenges faced by Yemenis amidst the country’s long-standing conflict and economic instability. [In a tragic accident, a bus carrying 30 passengers crashed on a highway, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities. The bus driver, who was reportedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance to the injured passengers and transport them to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and taking necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.]

Why It Matters

Road safety remains a crucial issue as accidents like this highlight the importance of following traffic regulations and maintaining vehicle speed limits. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures on public transportation. Understanding the circumstances surrounding the crash can help improve road infrastructure and implement policies to enhance passenger safety on highways.
