This July, approximately 27 million metric tons of this self-sustaining seaweed were recorded in these regions. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has been expanding since 2011, with contributing factors including agricultural runoff and warming waters. In response to the growing threat, the Mexican government announced plans to invest $115 million to combat the influx of sargassum, which can reach up to 9,000 tons on the worst days. Current collection efforts can only manage 1,200 tons daily, highlighting the scale of the issue.
