Captain of Iran’s women’s football team withdraws asylum request in Australia

Zahra Ghanbari, captain of the Iranian women’s football team, has withdrawn her asylum request in Australia, becoming the fifth team member to do so following their participation in the Asian Cup. Three players and one staff member had previously returned to Iran after initially seeking asylum due to concerns over reprisals for not singing the national anthem. The Australian government had offered asylum to all members of the delegation amid fears for their safety.
