Canadian PM says Hamas cannot play a role in the future of Palestine or take part in possible 2026 elections.
Canada plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September 2025, as announced by PM Mark Carney, who emphasized that Hamas would not be allowed to participate in future elections. This recognition follows similar announcements by the UK and France, despite the US’s rejection of such moves, arguing that they reward Hamas amid ongoing violence in Gaza.
