Chinese and Iranian foreign ministers met as a tense ceasefire held, with China playing a growing role in global diplomacy, including in the Middle East. In 2023, China helped re-establish diplomatic ties between Riyadh and Tehran, and both the US and Iran are seeking China’s help to de-escalate tensions, although China is not officially mediating. The question now is whether China can push the two sides towards peace and how its economic influence may impact negotiations.
Why It Matters
China’s involvement in Middle East diplomacy is significant as it could potentially help ease tensions and promote peace in the region. With its economic clout, China may have the leverage to influence negotiations and potentially bring about a resolution to the ongoing conflict. The meeting between the Chinese and Iranian foreign ministers highlights China’s increasing role in global affairs and its potential to shape the future of the Middle East.
