Rep. Darrell Issa announces retirement, impacting GOP control of House

California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa has announced his retirement, reversing his earlier statement about not quitting ahead of a challenging reelection in a redrawn district. Issa, a former chair of the House Oversight Committee known for his opposition to President Obama and Hillary Clinton, cited the need for a new chapter in his life. His decision adds uncertainty to the race for California’s 48th District, which is now more favorable to Democrats following recent redistricting. He endorsed San Diego County Supervisor James Desmond as his successor.
