California City Issues State of Emergency Following Cyberattack

Suisun City, California, with a population of 29,518, has declared a state of emergency following a significant cyberattack that began on Friday morning. The attack compromised the city’s information technology systems, affecting critical public safety operations, including 911 services, police and fire dispatch, and various city functions. While the city assured residents that there is no immediate threat to the public and that all emergency services remain operational, it has shut down its computer network to contain the threat and aid in a federal investigation. Calls for service are currently being handled by the Solano County dispatch center as the city collaborates with federal and state agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, to restore systems and investigate the incident.

Why It Matters

Cyberattacks on local governments have been on the rise, reflecting a growing trend in cybersecurity threats targeting public infrastructure. Earlier this year, both Foster City and Pittsburg experienced similar incidents, with Foster City facing a ransomware attack that resulted in a week-long disruption of services. Pittsburg suffered a significant financial loss due to a phishing attack, highlighting the vulnerability of municipal systems. These events emphasize the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures across public sector entities to protect against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
