One of South Africa’s top police officials, Deputy Crime Intelligence Chief Major-General Feroz Khan, survived an assassination attempt in Johannesburg on Sunday evening. He was shot while driving home and has been hospitalized for emergency surgery. The shooting occurred just days before Khan was scheduled to testify at a public inquiry into criminal activity within the South African police force, known as the Madlanga commission. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that investigations are underway but cautioned against speculating on motives or connections to the upcoming testimony. Khan was recently arrested along with two others for allegedly dealing in and possessing precious metals illegally, following an incident involving a businessman with a significant quantity of gold at the airport in 2021.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the ongoing struggles within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies, particularly regarding corruption and organized crime. The Madlanga commission was established after allegations surfaced that organized crime groups had infiltrated the police. Khan’s recent arrest and the dramatic circumstances of the shooting raise questions about the safety of those involved in exposing corruption within the police force. The inquiry aims to address these serious issues and restore public trust in South Africa’s policing institutions, which have faced significant scrutiny and criticism in recent years.
