Somali pirates seize second tanker near Yemen in three months

Three security officials from Puntland have confirmed the hijacking of the tanker MT Asana, which occurred on Friday approximately 65 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen. The vessel, registered under the Tanzanian flag, was en route to the port of Bosaso in Puntland when it was seized by seven armed men who launched their operation from a remote area near the Puntland town of Garacad. While the Indian Ocean is closely monitored by the European Union Naval Force for anti-piracy efforts, the Gulf of Aden has less surveillance, making it increasingly vulnerable to piracy activities. This lack of protection is believed to be a factor contributing to the resurgence of piracy in the region.

Why It Matters

The resurgence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden is significant as it poses risks to maritime safety and global shipping routes. Historically, the region has seen increased piracy activities, especially in the late 2000s, leading to international naval responses. The EU Naval Force has focused its efforts on the Indian Ocean, but the reduced presence in the Gulf of Aden has allowed piracy to thrive again. As piracy disrupts trade and raises shipping costs, it highlights the ongoing challenges in securing international waters, especially in areas with insufficient naval oversight.
