Kikuyu Men Address Stigma Around Female Surnames in Kenya

One of the notable figures challenging traditional male surname norms in Kenya is musician Peter Kĩgia, who adopted his mother’s name for his stage persona, Kĩgia wa Esther. The 60-year-old artist, known for benga music, emphasizes that using his mother’s name reflects love and respect, and he has even named his record company Wa Esther Productions. This practice is gaining traction among younger male musicians in Kenya, with names like Waithaka wa Jane emerging in the music scene. However, many still retain their formal male surnames. Journalist Simon Macharia Wangũi also chose his mother’s name as his official surname, expressing disdain for crediting an absent father. Despite the shift, societal perceptions persist, with some believing that children raised by single mothers may lack morals, as highlighted by broadcaster Evans Kibe Waceke. A debate on the topic intensified when motivational speaker Robert Burale claimed female surnames undermine masculinity, prompting discussions about the challenges faced by those bearing such names.

Why It Matters

The conversation around male musicians and journalists using maternal surnames reflects broader societal changes regarding gender roles and family structures in Kenya. Historically, patriarchal norms have dictated naming conventions, often sidelining the contributions of women. The increasing acceptance of maternal surnames among male artists signifies a cultural shift, challenging stereotypes associated with single parenthood and male identity. This dialogue is vital in understanding evolving perceptions of masculinity and family dynamics within Kenyan society.
