Air India Pilot Test Reports Cannabis Positive Result: Key Insights

What You Need to Know
• A review by aviation-medicine specialist David Newman for Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau found cannabis affects cognitive performance.
• A 2022 clinical trial led by Thomas Marcotte tested 191 regular cannabis users and observed varied impairment levels.
• THC can remain detectable in blood for days, complicating the assessment of impairment compared to alcohol.

A review conducted by aviation-medicine specialist David Newman for Australia’s Transport Safety Bureau concluded that cannabis significantly impacts behavior, cognition, and psychomotor performance, particularly affecting complex tasks like flying. The review highlighted that the effects of cannabis can last up to 24 hours. In a 2022 randomized clinical trial led by Thomas Marcotte at the University of California San Diego, 191 regular cannabis users were tested, revealing that while THC initially impaired performance on simulated driving tasks, users returned to baseline performance after approximately four-and-a-half hours. This complicates aviation testing, as a positive THC test does not indicate when cannabis was consumed or if the individual was impaired at the time of testing.

Why It Matters

The findings from David Newman and Thomas Marcotte are significant for aviation safety regulations and cannabis use. Unlike alcohol, where blood concentration correlates with impairment, THC’s relationship with impairment is complex and varies by individual biology and usage patterns. Studies indicate that while impairment from smoking cannabis typically lasts three to five hours, it can last longer with edibles. This complexity poses challenges for regulators in establishing clear guidelines for cannabis use among pilots and other safety-sensitive positions.
