Russia claims it aided in thwarting Niger coup attempt

The Alliance of Sahel States, comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, condemned a recent attempted coup in Niger, labeling it a “betrayal” by a group of soldiers. The extent of military involvement and any casualties from the incident remain unclear. Niger’s military leader, General Tiani, who assumed power last year after ousting the elected president, has yet to comment on the situation. State media reported that several alleged mutineers were arrested, and normal commercial activities resumed in the capital, Niamey, following the unrest. Increased security measures have been implemented around key sites in the city, including military Air Base 101, which has previously faced jihadist attacks.

Why It Matters

Niger, along with its neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, is currently governed by military regimes that have distanced themselves from Western alliances while fostering ties with Russia. Despite this shift, jihadist violence remains prevalent, posing significant security challenges. The recent attempted coup highlights internal discontent within the military, complicating efforts to combat external threats posed by jihadist groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda. The situation underscores the fragile state of governance in the Sahel region, where military rule has not resolved ongoing security dilemmas.
