We must stop mollycoddling kids, says Saturday detentions head teacher

Head teacher Alun Ebenezer of Caldicot School in Monmouthshire has introduced Saturday detentions as part of a zero-tolerance approach to poor behavior. He believes in strict discipline and firm boundaries, criticizing the culture of “hiding behind words like ‘wellbeing'” and “mollycoddling” children. Despite facing backlash from some parents, he believes in immediate consequences for misbehavior, including same-day detentions. The school has seen improvements in behavior, but still needs to work on attendance, safeguarding, and developing pupils’ skills. Older pupils and staff have noticed positive changes in the school’s culture under Mr. Ebenezer’s leadership.
