An Australian novelist jailed in China, Yang Hengjun, has described his “unbearable suffering” in a letter as he enters his seventh year of detention following a suspended death sentence for espionage, which he denies. He thanked Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for efforts to secure his medical care and reunification with his family, while Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed deep concern for his wellbeing. Yang, who previously worked for China’s Ministry of State Security and has faced declining health, remains hopeful for peace and mutual love among diverse cultures.
