Ethiopian long-distance runner Yebrgual Melese has died at the age of 36 after experiencing a medical emergency during a training session in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation confirmed her passing, stating that despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved. Melese had a successful career, winning marathons in cities like Houston, Prague, and Shanghai, and was training for an upcoming race in Ottawa scheduled for May 24. Her last competitive appearance was in a marathon in Beijing in May of the previous year, where she did not finish. The federation expressed deep condolences to her family, friends, and fans over her sudden death.

Why It Matters

Yebrgual Melese was a prominent figure in long-distance running, particularly noted for her victories in major marathons. Winning in Houston and Prague in 2015, she also achieved a second-place finish in the Chicago Marathon, highlighting her competitiveness in the World Marathon Majors. The tragic loss of Melese emphasizes the potential health risks athletes face, even during routine training. The Ethiopian athletics community, known for producing world-class runners, may feel her absence significantly, as her contributions to the sport were notable in a country with a rich history in long-distance running.
