Two workers, including 22-year-old Kurumi Otake, died in an explosion at Aeon Mall in Kumamoto, Japan, following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake on July 28, 2023. Their employer, the general goods store Habita, has expressed regret for instructing them to return to the building to secure cash after the earthquake. Otake was outside the mall when she encountered a relative and mentioned needing to go back inside for this task. Tragically, the explosion occurred about an hour after the earthquake, resulting in seven fatalities at the mall as part of the 38 total deaths from the earthquake. Habita’s sales director, Goji Yuse, acknowledged the instructions were inappropriate and stated that the company is considering how to proceed regarding the incident.
