The UK government is implementing new sanctions to target the finances of people smuggling networks, making it harder for gangs to profit from illegal migration across the English Channel. The proposed measures, expected to come into force this year, will disrupt the flow of money and specifically target people smugglers. In 2024, the number of people detected crossing the Channel in small boats increased by a quarter, prompting enhanced powers to tackle people smuggling, including freezing bank accounts and imposing travel bans and restrictions on suspected smugglers.
