England sewage spills hit record 3.6m hours last year

Water companies in England released a record 3.61 million hours of raw sewage into rivers and seas last year, with concerns about the impact on aquatic life. While the number of hours increased, total spills were down, according to figures from the Environment Agency. Water UK has pledged £104bn in investment over the next five years to address the issue.
