A woman survived a harrowing ordeal after her vehicle plunged approximately 20 meters into a chasm on the washed-out Ngapouri Road in Waiotapu, south of Rotorua, during heavy floods. Trapped upside down in her car, she spent about 15 minutes praying and singing hymns as floodwaters filled the vehicle. Her husband, who was driving behind her, was unaware that he had been following her when the incident occurred. In a remarkable escape, she managed to twist her body and exit the car alive, a feat described by many as miraculous. Emergency services were alerted, and her survival highlights the dangers posed by flooding in the region.

Why It Matters

Flooding can pose significant risks to life and property, especially in areas prone to heavy rains and infrastructure failures. Historical data indicates that New Zealand, particularly regions like Waiotapu, often faces severe weather events leading to road washouts and hazardous conditions. In recent years, increased rainfall and climate change have heightened the frequency and intensity of such flooding incidents, raising concerns about public safety and emergency preparedness. This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather events and the importance of being vigilant while driving in adverse conditions.
