Three men have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary after attempting to dig a tunnel from a massage parlour to a jewellery store in south London. Ioan Asafeti, 39, Laurentiu-Daniel Nitisoara, 38, and Sergiu Plastin, 42, were apprehended by the Metropolitan Police following a series of burglaries worth over £700,000. Officers responded to reports of a burglary on Mitcham Road, where they quickly arrested Nitisoara and later located Asafeti hiding on a rooftop. A search of the massage parlour revealed tools and plans for tunnelling into the adjacent jewellery shop. Plastin was arrested later at Stansted Airport while trying to flee to Ireland. The men are set to be sentenced on October 23 at Kingston Crown Court.
Why It Matters
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat organized crime in London, particularly targeting commercial burglaries. The Metropolitan Police’s Flying Squad has reported a 12% decrease in commercial burglary offenses over the past year, indicating effective policing strategies against such crimes. Additionally, investigations suggest that this group may be linked to similar criminal activities across Europe, highlighting the broader challenge of cross-border organized crime. The tactics used by the suspects, including tunnelling to bypass security systems, reflect a concerning trend in burglary methods that law enforcement agencies are actively working to address.
