Rachel Reeves, the UK’s first female chancellor, took a bold gamble in the Budget by increasing taxes by £40 billion, the highest level on record, to address the financial challenges left by the previous Tory government. Despite investing in the NHS and schools, economic experts fear that lower growth forecasts and rising inflation and interest rates could harm household incomes, with the Institute for Fiscal Studies warning that “working people” will bear the brunt of the tax hikes. Reeves is banking on the success of her Budget gamble to maintain economic stability and support the Labour government’s shaky popularity.
