The Milwaukee Bucks are facing uncertainty as they approach the 2026 NBA Draft, following their worst regular-season performance since 2016. The future of star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo looms large, with Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam indicating a decision on his potential contract extension will be made before the draft. Antetokounmpo has expressed ambivalence regarding his future, stating, “We’ll see,” when asked about playing under newly hired head coach Taylor Jenkins. The Bucks hold the 10th overall pick in the draft and must secure a significant player to bolster their chances, regardless of Antetokounmpo’s decision. Historically, the Bucks have struggled to develop homegrown talent, with their last successful draft pick, besides Antetokounmpo, being Andre Jackson Jr., highlighting issues caused by trading away future picks.
Why It Matters
The Bucks’ draft history and recent trades underscore a significant challenge in roster construction. Since selecting Antetokounmpo in 2013, the franchise has traded away numerous first-round picks, limiting their ability to develop new talent. Their last lottery appearance was in 2016 when they chose Thon Maker, who did not contribute to the team’s success. The failure to maintain a robust pipeline of young players has compounded depth issues, especially in the wake of injuries to key players like Khris Middleton and Antetokounmpo. As the Bucks prepare for the draft, their ability to draft effectively could be pivotal in shaping their future competitiveness.
