Businessman dies in spa fire

A coroner has ruled that Anthony Barnes, a 48-year-old father-of-two from Peterborough, died from smoke inhalation during a fire at a spa in a Moroccan hotel on March 22, 2023. While receiving a massage at the Jaal Riad resort, a small explosion occurred, leading to flames and thick smoke that prevented immediate rescue efforts. Despite attempts by hotel staff and later fire crews, Barnes was found unresponsive and pronounced dead later that day. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, with no indication it was intentional.
