A three-year-old boy was seriously injured after being thrown into a crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The incident occurred when a 30-year-old man, who was reportedly not known to the child, allegedly attacked him, leading to the boy being mauled by at least one crocodile. The zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, 55, displayed remarkable bravery by jumping into the 15-foot pit to rescue him. Emergency services were called at around 1:24 PM, and the child was airlifted to the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition with injuries including a broken arm and pelvis. The suspect has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was released on bail due to being deemed unfit for questioning.

Why It Matters

This incident raises significant concerns regarding safety protocols in zoos, particularly those involving dangerous animals like crocodiles. It underscores the importance of stringent measures to prevent unauthorized access to animal enclosures, especially in family-oriented attractions. Previous incidents involving animal attacks at zoos have prompted reviews of safety practices, as visitor safety remains a priority in the animal care industry. The ongoing investigation by Cambridgeshire Police will likely involve scrutiny of the zoo’s safety procedures and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
