Boy, 12, causes power outage after driving mother’s car on joyride

A 12-year-old boy took his mother’s Volkswagen Tiguan for a joyride, driving 38 miles from Salisbury to Horton Heath before crashing into a telegraph pole at 2 a.m. on Friday. The collision knocked out power for local residents, including Lorraine and Matthew Tricksey, who were awakened by the crash and initially thought it was a party outside their home. Fortunately, the boy sustained only minor injuries and was picked up by his mother after police arrived. The aftermath of the crash left the Tricksey household without electricity and forced them to use a generator while they dealt with the wreckage blocking their driveway. The vehicle remained at the scene for two days before being recovered.

Why It Matters

Joyriding incidents, especially involving minors, raise concerns about vehicle safety and responsibility. In the UK, it is illegal for anyone under 17 to drive a car, and such incidents highlight the risks involved not only for the driver but also for public safety. Furthermore, joyriding can lead to significant disruptions for local communities, as evident in this case where power outages affected multiple households. This incident also underscores the ongoing need for education about the dangers of unsupervised driving among young people and the importance of responsible parenting.
