Boston University students held a planned protest demanding the creation of a “sanctuary campus” to protect students from federal government overreach, coinciding with a Department of Homeland Security officer being spotted on campus. Roughly 60 students chanted outside the Dean of Students office, calling for BU to become a sanctuary campus. Similar demands have been made at other universities across the country. Concerns about potential loss of federal funding were raised by the BU College Republicans. The protest follows the recent detention of a Tufts University student by ICE agents. The Department of Homeland Security officer’s presence on campus caused panic among students. BU police and campus partners were not informed before the officer’s visit, leading to an investigation by BU Law Administration and BU police.
