Former DND Official: Increased Defence Spending Insufficient
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

OTTAWA —

Former Deputy Minister of National Defence, Stefanie Beck, criticized the Carney government’s recent defense spending increases as insufficient for Canada’s needs, stating it merely addresses immediate issues without long-term solutions. Speaking at a conference shortly after her retirement, she emphasized that while the investments appear substantial, they focus on repairing existing infrastructure rather than enhancing capabilities. Beck highlighted the challenge of demonstrating value for this spending to Canadians, especially as new military equipment will take time to materialize. She also warned that without robust self-defense capabilities, Canada risks relying on foreign powers for security.
