When Leanne Wicks moved from Sydney to a rural property in NSW’s Capertee Valley in 2002, her first friend was a curious king parrot, inspiring her to knit a sculpture of the bird. This hobby evolved into a project where she accurately photographed and knitted over 100 bird species, while also aiming to honor First Nations people and focus on conservation. Wicks, married to a Dabee woman, discovered her ancestral connection to bird collections and strives to be an ally. Excited by a rare sighting of the critically endangered regent honeyeater, she created a knitted version, sharing joy with others through her art.
