During a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House, President Biden addressed the international concern, particularly among the Irish, over the humanitarian situation of Palestinians amid Israel’s military action in Gaza. He emphasized the need to increase humanitarian aid in Gaza and achieve a cease-fire deal, stating that a two-state solution is crucial for lasting peace and security.

The prime minister of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Irish people’s empathy for the Palestinians due to their shared history of resistance to British rule. Varadkar expressed support for efforts to secure a cease-fire and called for an end to the bombing in Gaza, emphasizing the need for humanitarian relief on both sides.

While addressing concerns about the Middle East conflict and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Biden and Prime Minister Varadkar also celebrated the history between their two nations. Biden shared his appreciation for his Irish heritage and the bond between Ireland and the United States, while both leaders paid tribute to former Irish Catholic president John F. Kennedy.

Varadkar quoted Beau Biden, Joe Biden’s late son, emphasizing the promises made to children and the commitment to work for a better future for all. The mention of Beau Biden brought a poignant moment as President Biden was visibly moved by the tribute.
