Benjamin Balazs, a junior at Oregon, claimed his second consecutive Big Ten title in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on May 16, finishing the race in 8 minutes, 49.02 seconds. He secured victory over Minnesota’s Emmett Gerres, who finished in 8:49.89, in a strategic competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Lincoln, Nebraska. This race marked only Balazs’ second steeplechase event of the outdoor season, following a personal best of 3:36.23 in the 1,500 meters at the Oregon Twilight meet a week prior. Although his championship time was 21 seconds shy of his personal record, Balazs pulled ahead in the final lap to secure the win. The Oregon men’s team is currently in first place with 55 points, while the women sit in a tie for fifth with 19 points.

Why It Matters

Balazs’ repeated success in the steeplechase highlights his growing prominence in collegiate track and field, particularly within the Big Ten Conference. His performance contributes significantly to the Oregon men’s team’s leading position in the championships. Historically, the Oregon track and field program has a strong legacy of excellence in distance events, with numerous athletes achieving national recognition. The results from these championships will influence athlete rankings and team standings in the broader context of collegiate athletics, impacting recruitment and future competitions.
