A study in Meghalaya by researchers from various institutions revealed that cultural beliefs in the community, such as the concept of “bih” and “skai” representing evil eye and toxic vibes, contribute to barriers in cancer care. The region has a high incidence of upper digestive tract cancers due to risk factors like tobacco and alcohol consumption. Cultural underpinnings, misconceptions, and stigma were identified as key factors affecting health-seeking behavior and treatment outcomes for cancer patients in the tribal population of the state.
