Belarus will hold its next presidential election on Jan. 26, 2025, with long-time leader Alexander Lukashenko expected to run again despite being a staunch ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 2020 fraudulent election led to mass protests and the opposition, led by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, continues to advocate for democracy despite facing repression from Lukashenko’s regime. Lukashenko recently signed a law guaranteeing himself immunity and lifelong protection upon resignation from office.
