Bears sign Anthony Johnson Jr., former Packers draft pick

The Chicago Bears have signed former Green Bay Packers safety Anthony Johnson Jr. as they prepare for organized team activities next week. Johnson, a seventh-round draft pick in 2023, played 12 games for the Packers as a rookie and started four due to injuries. He was waived by Green Bay at the roster cutdown deadline in 2024 and subsequently picked up by the New York Giants. After a brief stint, Johnson was waived again in July 2024 but later placed on injured reserve. With the Bears bolstering their secondary by signing Coby Bryant, Cam Lewis, and drafting Dillon Thieneman in the first round, Johnson is expected to compete for a spot on the lower end of the roster. Out of the 13 players selected by the Packers in 2023, only six remain with the team, highlighting the challenges for new players to secure positions.

Why It Matters

Anthony Johnson Jr.’s signing with the Bears reflects the ongoing reshaping of NFL rosters, especially regarding young players who may not meet initial expectations. The Packers’ decision to release a significant portion of their 2023 draft class, including Johnson, underscores the competitive nature of securing and maintaining roster spots in the league. The Bears have invested in their secondary with multiple new acquisitions, indicating a strategic approach to enhancing their defense. Johnson’s journey from the Packers to the Giants and now to the Bears illustrates the volatility of NFL careers, where players frequently move between teams in search of opportunities.
