Tarique Rahman returns to Bangladesh after 17 years exile

The acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, has returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile, positioning himself as a top prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming February election. As the heir to the ruling family, Rahman is expected to take over from his ailing mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. His return marks a shift in the political landscape, with the BNP gaining momentum following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in 2024. Rahman’s arrival comes amidst concerns about potential unrest and violence in the run-up to the election, making it a crucial moment for both the party and the country’s political transition.
