In a closely contested Banff council election, Michelle Backhouse won the final seat by a single vote, receiving 742 votes to Allan Buckingham’s 741 after a recount. Backhouse attributed her composure during the stressful process to her training as a firefighter, while Buckingham acknowledged the unexpected razor-thin margin. Political scientist Jack Lucas noted that one-vote victories are extremely rare, although they can occur in small municipalities. Voter turnout in Banff remains low, with only 39% participating in the recent election.
