In Russia’s Siberia, the remains of a 50,000-year-old baby mammoth named Yana have been unveiled to the public after being uncovered by melting permafrost. Weighing over 100 kilograms and measuring 120 centimeters tall and 200 centimeters long, Yana is believed to have died at just 1 year old, with scientists describing her as the best-preserved mammoth body ever found. Found at the Batagaika crater in Yakutia, the “gateway to the underworld”, Yana will be studied by scientists at Russia’s North-Eastern Federal University to provide new insights into mammoth behavior and adaptation.
