A baby hedgehog was euthanized after being severely injured when a group of children in Maidstone, Kent, kicked it around like a football. A DPD driver intervened to stop the attack and took the hedgehog to a Vets for Pets clinic, where it was then transferred to Thorne Hedgehog Rescue. The hoglet, estimated to be just six to eight weeks old, suffered multiple blunt force injuries, including a broken upper palate and a lacerated liver. Despite receiving fluids and pain relief, the animal’s condition deteriorated, prompting the decision to relieve its suffering. Lisa Steward, owner of Thorne Hedgehog Rescue, noted this incident marks the fourth case in the last year involving similar cruelty towards hedgehogs, highlighting a growing concern for animal welfare in the area.
Why It Matters
Animal cruelty cases, such as the one involving the baby hedgehog, are increasingly reported, signaling a troubling trend in community attitudes towards wildlife. Hedgehogs are vulnerable to threats, especially when they are out during the day, which typically indicates illness or injury. Rescue organizations are currently overwhelmed, with Thorne Hedgehog Rescue caring for over 100 hedgehogs, many of which are orphaned. This incident underscores the importance of public awareness and education regarding the treatment of wildlife and the necessity of humane intervention in cases of animal distress.
