Nearly five years after a high-speed police chase led to a fatal crash on Highway 1 in B.C., a coroner’s inquest is examining the incident that resulted in the deaths of Gabriel Johnson Choi, Hasan Khaled Ayyad, and Allison Dawn Gilchrist. The crash occurred on December 29, 2020, when Ayyad drove the wrong way, colliding head-on with Choi’s vehicle, leading to two immediate deaths and one later in the hospital. The inquest has begun with family members sharing memories of the victims, while the retired watch commander testified about the police response and a miscommunication regarding the pursuit order. The inquest will continue until December 19, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
