Avian flu virus sparks mammal mutation concerns in Quebec

In 2022, an increase in deaths among seal populations in the St. Lawrence River raised concerns about the transmission of avian flu viruses to mammals, making them more pathogenic to humans. Between April and September, 209 dead or sick seals were found in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence, with the H5N1 strain of avian flu identified as the cause of death for several specimens.
