Avalanche Warning Issued in Southcentral Alaska
An avalanche warning is in effect until Saturday evening for areas from Girdwood to Portage Valley, as heavy rain, snow, and strong winds are expected to destabilize the snowpack. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center has identified “very dangerous avalanche conditions” with a high risk of both natural and human-triggered avalanches, urging people to avoid traveling in avalanche-prone areas. This season has already seen four avalanche-related fatalities in Southcentral Alaska, and further updates can be found on the center’s website.
