A Lithuanian rower, Aurimas Mockus, was rescued off the Queensland coast after getting caught in a tropical cyclone’s 130km/h winds and large waves while attempting a 12,000km Pacific Ocean crossing from San Diego to Brisbane in his solo rowing boat. The 24-year-old was taken aboard HMAS Choules, a Royal Australian Navy landing ship, after a two-day wait in turbulent waters due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Mockus, who had rowed about 70 nautical miles a day, activated his emergency beacon when the cyclone intensified, but was rescued unharmed and is on his way back to Australian shores.
