At least 15 people died when the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 ferry sank in the southern Philippines while en route to Jolo island. The vessel, carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members, encountered technical problems and sank near Baluk-Baluk in Basilan province. 316 passengers were rescued, 28 are missing, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause. Seafaring accidents are common due to storms, poorly maintained vessels, overcrowding, and lax safety enforcement in remote provinces.
