Alberta RCMP officers won’t face charges in shooting of teenager

Alberta’s police watchdog determined that the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Indigenous boy Hoss Lightning by two RCMP officers near Edmonton was not criminal, and no charges will be filed. The incident occurred on August 30, 2024, after Lightning, a member of the Samson Cree Nation, called 911 claiming he was being followed. Although he surrendered a machete and knife, he raised his backpack towards the officers, leading them to believe he was armed. The investigation concluded that the officers acted within reasonable force to protect themselves, despite the tragic outcome.
