ASIO links Iranian regime to antisemitic bombings and foreign coercion in threat assessment

An Australian citizen residing in Iran and a former resident of Iraq have been identified as key figures behind recent antisemitic fire-bombings in Sydney and Melbourne. ASIO Director General Mike Burgess disclosed these findings during a speech in Canberra while addressing the agency’s annual threat assessment. He revealed that the Iranian regime, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was directly involved in orchestrating these attacks on Jewish institutions. The arson incidents included the October 2024 firebombing of the Lewis Continental Kitchen in Bondi and a December 2024 attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne. Burgess also highlighted ASIO’s efforts to counter foreign espionage, including an incident where a foreign spy attempted to obtain sensitive AUKUS project information by bribing an Australian official. Additionally, ASIO warned of campaigns by foreign regimes targeting Australians for coerced repatriations, with at least five nations involved in such activities.

Why It Matters

This situation underscores the rising threat of foreign influence and espionage in Australia, particularly from hostile regimes like Iran. The connections between the IRGC and individuals orchestrating domestic attacks reflect a broader trend of international actors impacting Australian security. ASIO’s findings also highlight the risks posed by foreign attempts to manipulate or repatriate Australian citizens, which can destabilize community trust and safety. The ongoing investigation into these arson attacks and foreign espionage efforts emphasizes the need for vigilance in protecting national security interests.
