A genetic study of Asian elephants in northern Cambodia revealed a larger population than previously thought, with 51 elephants in the Prey Lang, Preah Roka, and Chhaeb Wildlife Sanctuaries showing greater genetic diversity. Researchers believe the area could become a “national stronghold” for elephants, contributing to Cambodia’s biodiversity conservation goals. The study, supported by USAID funds, aims to replicate the research in other areas and countries to help protect fragmented elephant populations.
